In 1973 CARTOONS founders Ed Bird and Michael “Magoo” Mugavero met in Waterford High School where Magoo started putting Ed’s poetry to music.  The duo would entertain at parties with Magoo on guitar and Ed singing.

Drummer James Cote and bassist Jeff Iwanici joined the ensemble in 1978 and Ed christened the band the CARTOONS.  They performed at such venerable rock clubs as CBGBs, Peppermint Lounge, The Rat and Club Babyhead.  The Cartoons often traveled with and opened for The Reducers and had a huge following in colleges along the east coast.

They released the well-received vinyl EP “Toys of Destruction” and appeared on The Towers of New London compilation receiving significant airplay on college/alternative radio stations.

The band dissolved in 1988 when Ed Bird was diagnosed with a life threatening illness.  They reunited two years later performing locally for two more years before Magoo became critically ill and passed away.

Other musicians who performed with the CARTOONS include Chris MacKay, Dave Pepin, Eric Applegate, Rick Welch and Scott Muir.

Ed Bird revived the band in 2018 with a new lineup:

Ed Bird, Lead Vocals

Jes Farnsworth, Lead Guitar and backing vocals

Bob Bourne, Bass

Bill Dumas, Drums
